Surrogacy Story….. one couple’s journey so far

The path to parenthood is a deeply personal journey, filled with dreams, anticipation, and, at times, an abundance of uncertainty.

For one anonymous same-sex couple, this voyage has led them into the intricate realm of surrogacy amidst the global upheaval of a pandemic.

Like many couples, they always presumed children would be part of their future. However, the profound isolation of the COVID lockdowns stirred doubts in their minds.

Initially, they earnestly considered adoption, immersing themselves in the process, only to realise the importance of a genetic link to their child — a facet of parenthood they hadn’t fully appreciated before. Their journey then led them to surrogacy.

This decision was met with contrasting emotions between the two partners. While one was initially inclined towards surrogacy, the other held reservations, concerned about the potential for exploitation of women.

Their decision to join Surrogacy UK (SUK) served to assuage these concerns. Conversing with surrogates and understanding their motivations first-hand brought them much-needed clarity and tranquillity.

The surrogacy journey is not without its obstacles. Waiting to meet a surrogate is emotionally taxing. The relentless socialising integral to SUK, although largely enjoyable, can be strenuous for those who are more introverted by nature. It’s hard not to feel as though you’re under a constant spotlight, attempting to appeal to potential surrogates.

However, over time, they found comfort in the process, treating it less as an audition and more as a unique adventure to be savoured in its own right.

Witnessing other couples progressing on their surrogacy journeys brought with it a twinge of envy, challenging their patience and resilience. Yet, they persisted, their hope undiminished.

The couple shares a strong belief in openness and inclusion. They intend to ensure their child knows their surrogate and includes her as a part of their lives. They also wish for their anonymous egg donor to be recognised and cherished.

Support from their families, though somewhat distant, has been a source of comfort. As with many couples, not all details of the surrogacy process are shared with family, but their awareness and backing during this pivotal journey are greatly appreciated.

While the dream of a child is fervently held, the couple emphasises the need for sensitivity when discussing their journey. They recognise that surrogacy may not always lead to a child, and while they hope for a positive outcome, they are keen to underline that their lives can still be fulfilled if parenthood does not become a reality.

Their story serves as a poignant reminder of the hope, resilience, patience, and understanding necessary on this unique path to parenthood. Despite the challenges, this is a journey they have willingly chosen and continue to embrace, one step at a time.
