Meet Annie, a retinal screener hailing from Rugby in the Midlands, who wears many hats and all with remarkable grace.
She’s not only a Surrogate Support Worker and Membership Advisor, but she is also an extraordinary host surrogate – five times over!
With SurrogacyUK for 12 years, Annie is deeply embedded in the surrogacy community, often hosting socials and becoming a beacon of support for many.
Annie’s journey into surrogacy was driven by her longing to experience pregnancy as she does not have children of her own. However, once she embarked on her first journey, she discovered a deeper calling – to help deserving Intended Parents (IPs) build their families.
Her decision to become a surrogate was met with a whirl of excitement, like standing on the precipice of an adventure. Of course, those close to her expressed concerns about her emotional wellbeing, given her child-free status. But once they recognised Annie’s thorough research and deep understanding of the journey ahead, their worries eased. Except for one relative, who remained sceptical until after the birth of Annie’s first surro-baby. When they saw how Annie flourished, untouched by any negative impact, they too offered their support.
In the face of misconceptions or adverse opinions about surrogacy, Annie displays grace and patience. With a playful eye-roll, she calmly dispels myths and educates people. Emphasising that she doesn’t ‘give her baby away’, but instead gives the baby back to the IPs, Annie paints an accurate picture of surrogacy for those willing to understand. As for those still holding onto their misconceptions, she kindly leaves them to their opinions, unshaken by their lack of understanding.
Annie met all her IPs at SurrogacyUK socials. Her candidness and genuine friendships developed organically, unburdened by expectations, as her IPs knew she was already in a team and, therefore, ‘unavailable.’ But they still made an effort to engage with Annie and her husband. The relationships that blossomed was always natural, evolving like any friendship. And the key, according to Annie, is open communication.
Reflecting on her surrogacy journeys, the moments that shine brightest are those following the deliveries. Witnessing her IPs fall in love with their baby filled her with immense pride and a sense of privilege. It’s these precious, heart-melting moments that made her journeys worthwhile.
Annie continues to maintain contact with her IPs post-delivery, with weekly messages and occasional meet-ups. The bond formed through surrogacy transcends into a life-long connection, adding another layer of warmth and depth to her life.
SurrogacyUK, Annie says, changed her life. Through her work with the organisation and her volunteering, she has created a substantial impact.
When asked about advice for potential surrogates, Annie suggests thorough research and taking your time to fully understand the process.
Annie’s story is a testament to the transformative power of surrogacy. From a desire to experience pregnancy to becoming a five-time host surrogate, her journey is one of resilience, dedication, and a profound love for helping others.
Her experience underscores the potential of surrogacy to rewrite the narrative of family and parenthood, forever changing lives, including her own.
