Surrogacy Stories…. Laura

Meet Laura, a theatre nursing assistant, seasoned surrogate, and super mum to four of her own.

While most would kick up their feet and relax after juggling a bustling household, Laura has taken a unique detour.

She’s currently 19 weeks pregnant with her second surrogate baby, making her a beacon of dedication and love.

Unveiling her surrogacy plans wasn’t easy. Like unwrapping a delicate gift, Laura felt a pang of unease, not wanting to invite the whispers of doubt or disapproval. Yet, she needn’t have worried. Her children, her biggest cheerleaders, were raring to go. Her partner, after the initial surprise had worn off, was equally supportive.

Despite the niggling worries from those who cared for her, the overriding response to her decision has been a shower of kindness and admiration.

However, Laura had her own mountains to conquer – mainly, the spectre of age. Having given birth to her first surrogate baby at 41 and now embarking on her second journey at 44, she’s gently debunking the myths surrounding older mums.

Here’s a fit, healthy woman with a spotless obstetric record showing us that age really is just a number.

The backdrop to her first surrogacy was the onset of the Covid pandemic, adding a whole new dimension of uncertainty. Laura’s life was a whirlwind, with her positive pregnancy test in February quickly followed by the world entering lockdown in March.

Working in a hospital during this time, Laura navigated through a sea of unpredictability. At 28 weeks, she was put on medical suspension, with baby Wilf making his grand entrance nine weeks later. In a silver lining to this tumultuous period, the hospital permitted both IPs, Matt and Aaron, and Laura’s partner Chris, to be present at the birth.

Laura never intended to be a second-time surrogate. But the incredible impact on her and her family was irresistible. And let’s be honest, who could resist that cheesy but true saying – she got more out of it than she could have ever imagined.

It was as if she had stumbled upon a treasure trove, an extended family that brought immeasurable joy to her life. With Matt and Aaron, and little Wilf, her family visits, and picture updates have become cherished rituals.

Now, she’s excitedly preparing for Charlie, Jonny and Reggie to join her unique family tapestry. They, along with their broader circle, have embraced Laura with open arms. Their homes are just 40 minutes apart, and Laura is eagerly looking forward to their family expanding by one more member.

Laura’s story is a beautiful testament to the power of surrogacy, where boundaries blur, and a tapestry of familial connections weaves together.

Through her journey, she’s showing us that family can be more than just those who share our blood; it’s about those who share our love, commitment, and support.
