Surrogacy Stories….. Alex

Meet Alex, a midwife from Edinburgh with a heart as vast as the Scottish Highlands.

At 35, she is a mother to two children, aged 16 and 12, and her tale is a remarkable one.

It’s a story of love, a journey of surrogacy, and the spirit of giving that has long been part of her identity.

From her teenage years, Alex harboured a deep interest in surrogacy, moved by the unfairness that pregnancy came easy to some while remaining an elusive dream for others. She often declared to her friends, with a spirit of generosity and hope, that if they struggled to conceive, she would be there to carry their children.

When one of her closest friends and his partner expressed their wish to start a family, Alex didn’t hesitate to offer her help. Their views on surrogacy aligned perfectly, and they began attending online socials and meetings as a team with Surrogacy UK (SUK).

The wealth of information was a bit overwhelming, but with the support of SUK and their surrogate guide, Rena, they found their footing in this new journey.

Understanding and acceptance are key to any surrogacy journey. Alex started with conversations with her own children, who were unperturbed by the idea, although her daughter did express some hilarious misunderstandings about the conception process!

Most of Alex’s close friends, many of whom shared mutual friends with her Intended Parents (IPs), were thrilled by the news, and her family was always supportive, keeping any potential worries they had to themselves.

However, not everyone was as accepting. Alex’s partner, who entered the picture when she was two years into her surrogacy team, struggled to adjust to the idea. His family, even more so, refused to engage in any dialogue about it, causing disappointment and hurt. Despite this, Alex tried to navigate this hurdle with grace and patience, offering to dispel any misconceptions they may have had.

Pregnancy is often unpredictable, and Alex’s journey was no different. She suffered from severe nausea and sickness until the 26th week, an experience made all the more challenging by her own reluctance to seek help.

Her IPs, however, were ever supportive, extending help whenever she needed it. A premature labour took Alex by surprise. The suddenness and lack of preparation left her feeling unprepared and somewhat sad at missing out on the final weeks of pregnancy. However, this was just another hurdle in an otherwise heart-warming journey.

After delivery, they all stayed together at the hospital for the next 72 hours, as the baby was premature. This period was an incredible experience, allowing Alex to support the new parents, while also giving her the chance to express milk for the baby.

Seeing her friends transition into parenthood was the highlight for Alex, reinforcing her belief that her surrogacy journey was the best decision she’d ever made.

Alex’s story is a shining example of love, resilience, and an incredible spirit of giving. She and her IPs remain the closest of friends, bound by an extraordinary experience.

Her journey underscores the significance of emotional and physical support in any surrogacy journey. Despite the occasional hiccups and emotional challenges, the joys far outweigh the difficulties.

Seeing her friends transform into a family has been the greatest reward for Alex, a poignant testament to her courage and love.
